FSU Catholic Student Union x BLUE Service Trip 2025

March 9-15, 2025

Each sanitation project involves the construction of VIP latrines for 12 - 16 families in need of improved sanitation. Bathrooms that are safe, private, and sanitary improve the public health and standard of living for families living in rural poverty, while protecting their local water sources.

VIP LATRINES

We build ventilated-improved pit (VIP) latrines to provide families with a bathroom that is safe, private and sanitary. The homes that benefit from new VIP latrines either don't have bathrooms at all and rely on neighbors/practice open-defection, or they have make-shift structures that are unsafe. VIP latrines prevent the contamination of local water sources and the spread of disease, but they also provide families with safety from collapsable structures and the dignity they deserve.

BUILD A SANITATION PROJECT FROM START TO FINISH & CONNECT AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY WITH ACCESS TO PRIVATE TOILETS.

  • STAY: Sleep in the community inside a local house, community center, or school. Cots provided.

  • PRAY: Pray, meditate, and celebrate mass throughout the trip with the group and community. A time to put our faith in action.

  • WORK: Learn how to use tools to construct 16-18 bathrooms. See the project through from start to finish.

  • ENCOUNTER: Spend an evening with a local family learning about their life and culture.

  • EAT: Typical dishes prepared by local cooks from the community. Light breakfast, full lunch and dinner provided every day in the community. (Transportation days not included).

  • REFLECT: We are the best versions of ourselves when we commit to serving others. Be open to sharing your service experience with your fellow BLUE fam and how you will apply what you’ve discovered back home.

Prepare to be live and serve in solidarity for a week in a host community in the Dominican Republic with your FSU Catholic Student Union Community!
